Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

  • What is MTSS?

MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. MTSS is an instructional framework that includes universal screening of all students, multiple tiers of instruction and support services, and an integrated data collection and assessment system to inform decisions at each tier of instruction.

    Key Components

    • Universal screening of all students early in the school year
    • Tiers of interventions that can be amplified in response to levels of need
    • Ongoing data collection and continual assessment
    • Schoolwide approach to expectations and supports
    • Parent involvement

    How does it work?

Tier 1: The whole class (75-90%)

All students in the general education classroom are in this tier.

Tier 2: Small group interventions (10-25%)

Students in Tier 2 still attend Tier 1 lessons with the rest of the class. But they get more targeted support through small group lessons.

Tier 3: Intensive individualized support (<10%)

Small group work or individual lessons, in addition to Tier 1 classroom work.
